Why one country has 137 different gold rates

Gold trades on a single international price, quoted in dollars an ounce. What happens between that price and the board outside your jeweller's shop is local, and it is why a customer in Guwahati and a customer in Ahmedabad will not see the same number on the same morning.

Bullion enters India through a handful of points and clears mostly through Mumbai and Ahmedabad, which is why those two cities usually read lowest. Everything after that is carriage: freight, insurance and the cost of holding stock further from the source. On top of it sits the local bullion association's daily quote, the dealer's own spread, and the city's demand that week — a town in the middle of its wedding season holds firm while a quiet one eases.

The units, city by city

The same weight has different names depending on where you are standing. A tola is 11.664 g and is how the north and west have always counted; Bengal calls that same weight a bhori. A pavan in Kerala and a sovereign in Tamil Nadu are both 8 g, and in both states most customers never think in 10 g at all. Kerala quotes 22K per gram; Gujarat and Maharashtra quote per 10 g. What the board leaves out

Every rate on this site is the metal alone. A finished bill adds making charges — which vary far more between two shops on the same street than the metal rate varies between two cities — plus wastage, hallmarking, and 3% GST on the total. When you are comparing, compare the bill, not the board.

Why does the gold rate change from city to city in India?

The metal is priced internationally, but each city adds freight and insurance from the import points, the local bullion association’s daily quote, the dealer’s spread and its own demand. Mumbai and Ahmedabad, where most bullion clears, usually read lowest; cities furthest from them — Guwahati, Jammu, Patna — usually read highest.
